Three reflective primary color (red, green and blue) filters based on 2D sub-wavelength gratings are proposed. The devices are constructed and analyzed by the rigorous coupled-wave analysis (RCWA) and the finite-difference time-domain method (FDTD). Referring to the scaling properties of the Maxwell's equations, the red and green filters are designed by magnifying dimensions of the blue filter certain times. The central wavelength of the three color (red, green and blue) filters are 654nm, 544nm and 446nm. With the maximum reflectance of three primary (red, green and blue) color filters reaching 93%, 84%, 66% respectively, the color filters have a good angular tolerance, up to 60°. Although the reflectance curves at different incident angles are not thoroughly perfect, the chromaticity coordinates are so adjacent that the colors at different incident angles are hardly distinguishable. Since the high incident angular tolerance property these three reflective primary color filters have, they expected potential usage in projection display, inkless printing and other fields.
